Sun Bunnies

07 Mar

In 2019, the Easter weekend comes late in April, so now is the time to secure your seats to jet away to warmer climes for a dash of vitamin D, an early tan, and lashings of romance.

Best laid plans are when it comes to organising a romantic escape. Last minute is also brilliant but can burn a hole in your pocket. In 2019, the Easter weekend comes late in April, so now is the time to secure your seats to jet away to warmer climes for a dash of vitamin D, an early tan, and lashings of romance. There’s sun loungers pool side and the swish of the ocean calling. Some bunnies got to do it right?

Malta

Sometimes overlooked for a Mediterranean break, this historical island is a bargain and guarantees exceptional sunshine in the low to mid 20’s C, simply perfect for a day by the pool. Inland and away from the vibrant Valetta is the Corinthia Palace Hotel and Spa once a private Villa feels like escaping to the secluded home of rich friends. This is a place of peace and tranquility that is the perfect tonic to unwind from your city life and feel your body relax. If you like to be in town then you’ll love Palazzo Consiglia which is an elegant townhouse in the heart of historical Valetta. You can stroll out the front door to explore or relax in the rooftop plunge pool. For something different try The Cugo Gran Malta which is a fabulous design hotel built into the ancient fortifications of Senglea and dating back to the Knights of Malta. Imagine creamy limestone vaulted ceilings, free standing bath tubs, and a roof top pool overlooking the marina. Walk the Mdina in the late afternoon so you can end up at De Mondion on the roof top of the Xara Palace, it’s divine. Another favourite for dinner at Ramplia in the bastion walls of Valletta is the authentic setting for pure romance and ambiance.  Ladies may need a wrap for the evening on the terrace. You’ve got to get out on the water while in Malta and whoever you stay with can help organise a private trip of a duration that suits you to see the spectacular waters of the Blue Lagoon, or drop into the islands of Gozo or Comino for lunch. The Grand Harbour is a UNESCO World Heritage site and best seen from your speedboat or local schooner, your choice. Fly with British Airways from London and if you fly Club it’s a 160-tier point destination.

La La Land

Pool at Shutters by the Sea in Santa Monica California.

It’s true that oranges and lemons grow on trees in California and the sun shines pretty much all the time. April is gorgeous before the summer rush and you know it’s going to be great. The beauty of a long weekend in LA is the frequency of flights and the ability to have city, beach and a plethora of options all in one destination. One of my favourites is the Bel Air Hotel tucked up in the canyon but literally only minutes away to West Hollywood or Santa Monica. It’s the palace of chic favoured by Hollywood Royalty who need a local place to hide in. It’s not unusual to find yourself passing someone of mega film star status as you stroll along the meandering paths to the pool or breakfast. It’s old school with a sensational and subtle face lift. If you need an ocean view then Shutters on the Beach is the perfect address and looks exactly as you might hope your California beach house might. Now you may think it’s LA so you’ll have to drive, but really not necessary at either of these spots. The hotel can organise airport transfers, and then you just use your uber app to get around town selecting SUV or Town car for a superior ride. The dining options are endless but a few of my favourites that never fail to please. Spago but get your hotel concierge to secure you a spot on the brick patio, it’s the place to be. Nobu at Malibu is pure heaven and the view is as gorgeous as the food, again reservations beyond essential. Micheals in Santa Monica has been the setting for romance for 40 years, it works every time. It’s time to fall in love in La Land all over again.
